WASKOM, TEXAS Waskom Holds Prayer Service for School, Community May 21, 2006 10:54 PM With pious prayer and hopeful penance, the faces in the crowd of about 200 asked for a new beginning at Waskom High School. "People were asking what can we do? Well this is something we can do,"says Liz Ratcliff. She and the other Waskom school board members, faculty, and administrators have dealt with the fallout of a sex scandal for more than two weeks. The Harrison County Sheriff's Office charged former high school math teacher Ashley Grisham and teacher's aide Darryl Phillips of each having an improper sexual relationship with a student. A former middle school teacher, Tara Crisp, also stands charged with sexual assault. "It's not acceptable. In no fashion. I'm a parent. It's not acceptable," says Sheila Brown. Her daughter had math class with Grisham. "As a matter of fact, she said it was her favorite teacher," says Grisham. Some say the recent revelations have made religion critical for this tight knit town of just over a thousand. That's why the ministerial association, made up of pastors from all walks of faith, organized this service. "Maybe it will bring more community within us. That will be good," says Ratcliff. It's a community it's religious leaders say, must find not lose faith amidst the controversial storm. www.ksla.com/Global/story.asp?S=4931875
